Location: Soweto, Gauteng
Client: Circuits Nkondo School (CLS)
Sunspec Solar completed a grid-tied solar installation for Circuits Nkondo School in Soweto, providing the facility with reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable energy for its classrooms, laboratories, and administrative offices.
This system was designed to reduce the school’s dependency on the municipal grid, lower operational electricity costs, and demonstrate renewable energy leadership within the education sector.
The school required a commercial-scale solar solution to meet daytime energy needs while allowing for future energy storage expansion. Sunspec Solar engineered and installed a high-efficiency grid-tied system using Huawei smart inverter technology and Freedom Won high-voltage lithium storage, ensuring optimal performance, long-term reliability, and safety for the school environment.
Solar Array: 1,100 × 550 W LONGi panels → 605 kWp total capacity
Inverters: 5 × Huawei 100KTL Grid-Tie Inverters
Battery Storage: 4 × Freedom Won 300/240 HV lithium-ion batteries (≈1.2 MWh total capacity)
System Type: Grid-tied solar with battery integration for future hybrid capability
Mounting Structure: Ground-mounted steel frame installation
Monitoring: PLc Controller and Huawei Smart Loggers
Advanced monitoring capabilities, ensuring peak efficiency and reliable performance year-round.
Sunspec Solar’s engineering team managed all aspects of the installation — from design and permitting through to electrical integration and commissioning. The Huawei grid-tied inverters ensure maximum efficiency and real-time energy yield optimization, while the Freedom Won HV batteries provide peak-load support and a pathway for future off-grid functionality. All components were installed following strict safety standards suitable for educational facilities, ensuring reliability and low maintenance requirements.
Since commissioning, the Circuits Nkondo School solar system has: Reduced grid energy use by over 60% during daylight hours Lowered the school’s monthly electricity costs substantially Provided clean, renewable power to support teaching and technology facilities Set an example of sustainability leadership within the Soweto education district The project demonstrates Sunspec Solar’s commitment to empowering communities through renewable energy and providing scalable solutions for public institutions.
